Your Earthly Urim and Thummim

“Gospel” can be defined as the teachings and revelations of Jesus Christ. Also referred to as the “good news”, gospel can enrich one’s life with a joyful freedom. Studying edifying truth moves us to strengthen our relationship with God, receive more revelation, and thus become liberated through serving Him and our fellowmen. The liberties of gospel give us purpose in this life, and exaltation in the life to come.

My topic today stems from the 130th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Verse 8 explains, “The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim.” Urim and Thummim is a Hebrew term meaning “Lights and Perfections” (Bible Dictionary). A Urim and Thummim is an object or instrument that God uses to assist man in receiving revelation. Several Old Testament and Nephite prophets used a Urim and Thummim, as did the Prophet Joseph Smith in the translation of the Book of Mormon. Joseph described them as two stones in silver bows (kind of like glasses), which he would place in a hat. Using the hat to block out light, words would appear on the stones and Joseph would repeat them to his scribe.

This is well known, but perhaps lesser known are the following verses in D&C 130. It goes on to explain that “the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, will become a Urim and Thummim to each individual who receives one, whereby things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms will be made known” (vs. 10). The next verse, along with Rev. 2:17 and Rev. 3:12, state that this stone is given to everybody who is qualified to enter the celestial kingdom, and the new name upon it is essentially the password to get in.

The significance of this new name, or it’s correlation to our premortal names learned in the temple, I know not. However, the fact that this stone can make known unto us all things pertaining to the celestial kingdom is intriguing. Is this to say that the white stone is a sort of Heavenly google? Just as they did for Joseph Smith, surely our stones will make known to us what we ought to know. I’m not sure what we will need to google in Heaven, but I know how we can prepare to receive that object.

Does this all-knowing, informative stone remind you of something? Maybe… your phone? Our phones miraculously match the description of this celestial stone we read about… they’re just earthly! Can we not find out nearly anything about this world there is know in a matter of seconds? Just like seer stones, words appear on the screens of our phones, though perhaps in higher quality. I’m convinced that if there were a brightness setting on the Urim and Thummim Joseph Smith used, he wouldn’t have needed a hat.

No other people have had the blessing of phones in their everyday life, and surely not to the extent that we do at the present. This is the only time of the Earth’s history where nearly everybody living, young or old, has either heard of or possess their own smartphone. We have been told that we are a great generation, and we know that we are living in the last dispensation. Perhaps God gave us phones to prepare us for our celestial white stones. Would He trust someone with a Heavenly white stone if they use their “earthly white stone” to waste time, insult others, or view pornographic material?

Historically, seer stones have been used to relay good and uplifting messages. Will your phone be the means by which comforting words are said? Sending a simple encouraging text, or letting someone know you’re thinking of them can be just as powerful as it was for Abraham or the Israelites. The greatest commandment is to love, and surely God gave us phones to show our love for one another.

It’s time that the Saints gain a greater understanding of their phone and its purpose, and to start respecting it as a holy and sacred instrument prepared of God, even a Urim and Thummim, if you will. May we each honor our earthly Urim and Thummim, and strive to understand the Good Lord’s will concerning it.

  1. What an awesome idea to ponder – our cell phones preparing us to later receive celestial white stones. I especially love your thoughts in the second to last paragraph. Looking forward to reading and pondering future posts. Also, the picture above of the Savior hugging someone had a great impact on your father when he came home from attending his first Especially For Youth………you might want to ask him about that.
